How to Store Cannabis Properly: Keep Your Flower Fresh
Improperly stored cannabis loses potency, flavour, and quality within weeks. Our storage guide covers everything from humidity packs to UV protection so your product stays fresh.
Why Cannabis Storage Matters
That premium AAAA flower you just ordered from Mohawk Medibles was carefully cultivated, cured, and sealed to preserve its peak potency and flavour. But once it arrives at your door, its quality is in your hands.
Improperly stored cannabis degrades quickly. THC converts to CBN (a less potent, more sedating cannabinoid), terpenes evaporate, and moisture imbalances invite mould or crumbling dryness. Within just two weeks of poor storage, you could lose 10-15% of potency and most of the terpene profile.
Here is how to keep every gram as fresh as the day it was packaged.
The Four Enemies of Cannabis
1. Light
UV radiation breaks down cannabinoids and terpenes faster than any other factor. A 1976 study from the University of London found that light is the single greatest factor in cannabinoid degradation. THC degrades into CBN when exposed to UV light, reducing potency and altering effects.
Solution: Store cannabis in opaque containers or in a dark location. If using glass jars, choose amber or dark-coloured glass. Never leave cannabis on a windowsill or countertop where sunlight hits.
2. Air (Oxygen)
Oxygen oxidizes THC into CBN and degrades terpenes. Every time you open a container, fresh oxygen enters and begins this process.
Solution: Use airtight containers. Squeeze excess air out of bags before sealing. For long-term storage, vacuum-sealed containers are ideal. Minimize how often you open the container — consider portioning out daily amounts into a smaller container.
3. Temperature
Heat accelerates cannabinoid degradation and terpene evaporation. Temperatures above 25°C (77°F) create conditions for mould and mildew growth. Extreme cold can cause trichomes to become brittle and break off.
Solution: Store at 15-21°C (59-70°F). A cool closet, drawer, or cupboard works perfectly. Do NOT store in the refrigerator (too humid) or freezer (trichome damage). Room temperature in a consistently cool area is ideal.
4. Humidity
Too much moisture breeds mould. Too little moisture dries out flower, making it harsh to smoke and degrading terpenes. The sweet spot is 55-62% relative humidity.
Solution: Use humidity control packs (Boveda or Integra Boost). These two-way humidity packs add moisture when the environment is too dry and absorb it when too humid. A 62% Boveda pack is the industry standard for cannabis storage.
Best Containers for Cannabis
Glass Mason Jars (Best Overall)
Airtight, non-reactive, reusable, and available everywhere. Choose wide-mouth jars for easy access. Pair with a Boveda pack for perfect humidity control.
Tip: Fill the jar as full as practical. Less empty space means less trapped oxygen.
UV-Protective Glass (Premium Option)
Violet or amber glass jars block UV rays while maintaining the benefits of glass. Brands like Infinity Jars and Cannador make purpose-built cannabis storage containers.
Ceramic or Stoneware (Traditional)
Opaque and cool to the touch, ceramic containers block all light and maintain stable temperatures. They have been used for herb storage for centuries.
What NOT to Use
Storage by Product Type
Flower
Glass jar + 62% humidity pack + cool dark location. Properly stored flower maintains peak quality for 6-12 months. After 12 months, potency begins to decline noticeably.
Edibles
Follow the same guidelines as regular food products. Most gummies and chocolates should be stored in a cool, dark place. In hot climates or summer months, refrigeration prevents melting. Check packaging for specific storage instructions and expiration dates.
Concentrates
Short-term (1-4 weeks): Silicone or parchment paper in an airtight container, room temperature.
Long-term: Glass container in a cool dark place. Shatter can be wrapped in parchment paper and stored in a glass jar. Live resin and sauce should be kept at cool temperatures to preserve terpenes.
Pre-Rolls
Keep in their original tubes or containers. Pre-rolls are more susceptible to drying out because the ground cannabis has more surface area exposed to air. A Boveda pack inside a sealed container extends freshness significantly.
Vape Cartridges
Store upright to keep oil in contact with the wick. Room temperature is fine. Avoid extreme heat (like a hot car) which can cause leaking and degrade the oil.
Long-Term Storage Tips
If you are buying in bulk (ounces or more), consider these strategies:
1. Portion into weekly amounts in small jars. Keep the bulk supply sealed and only open it when refilling your weekly jar.
2. Label everything with strain name, date purchased, and THC percentage.
3. Rotate stock — use oldest product first (first in, first out).
4. Check monthly for any signs of mould (white fuzzy spots, musty smell) or excessive dryness.
5. Replace humidity packs every 2-4 months depending on climate and how often you open the container.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I freeze cannabis for long-term storage?
We do not recommend freezing flower. The extreme cold makes trichomes brittle, and they snap off easily — like tiny glass beads. You lose potency every time frozen cannabis is handled. Cool room temperature storage is far better for flower.
Q: How long does cannabis stay fresh?
Properly stored cannabis maintains peak quality for 6-12 months. After that, potency gradually declines. By 18-24 months, THC degradation becomes significant even with ideal storage.
Q: Do Boveda packs change the flavour of cannabis?
No. Boveda packs use a salt-water solution sealed in a permeable membrane. They only exchange pure water vapour — no chemicals, no flavours, no odours. They are the industry standard for cannabis humidity control.
Q: Should I store different strains separately?
Yes. Different strains have different terpene profiles, and storing them together can cause aroma blending. Keep each strain in its own labelled container to preserve the unique character of each.
